Here at SWGP we have lots of room for progression. We decided to ask our staff about their career journeys here at SWGP. Our second progression story within our series is from Yasmin Brough, the Quality & Compliance Lead at Gainsborough Hall.

Can you give us an overview of what your role entails, and your responsibilities?

“My role as Quality and Compliance Lead involves working closely with the Medical Director to ensure that we at SWGP provide high-quality, safe and efficient services to our patients.

My responsibilities include ensuring we have efficient processes in place relating to safety, quality and governance. My main duties are managing the following:

  • Feedback, Compliments and Complaints from Patients and Partners
  • Incidents
  • Policies and Procedures
  • Statutory and Mandatory Training
  • Annual Staff Surveys
  • Risk Registers
  • Information Governance, in collaboration with the Head of Digital Services.
  • Providing administrative support for various meetings relating to safety, quality, governance and service delivery.
  • CQC Compliance.

I am also going to be launching a Quality Service for member practices in the coming months, in order to help them with the same sorts of things”.

What was your first role in the NHS, when did you start and how have you progressed?

“My first role starting in the NHS was working as an Admin Apprentice in the Research & Development department at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust, which I started in 2017 after leaving secondary school following completion of my GCSE’s.

My role involved working with lots of Research Nurses and Practitioners, providing admin support to the clinical teams for various research studies, mainly relating to Oncology.

After working in R&D, I then moved over to the Medical Education department, where I worked closely with a number of Foundation Doctors (Years 1 & 2) to ensure completion of their e-portfolio. This involved liaising with Consultants around the hospital to arrange weekly teaching sessions for the FY1 & FY2’s, and tracking their progress throughout the year to ensure they were on track to complete and move onto their next year of training.

After just over a year of working in MedEd, I then decided that I’d quite like to do a sidestep into Primary Care, therefore I joined the Primary Care Team at Coventry & Rugby CCG as an Administrator. This mainly involved providing diary and email support to the Head of Primary Care Commissioning and providing administrative support for various meetings in each Place (Coventry, Rugby and Warwickshire North).

I then decided to move to Coventry and Rugby GP Alliance (CRGPA), working as a Governance and Safety Facilitator however quickly progressed to Patient Safety and Clinical Governance Manager in a matter of a year. I had various roles at CRGPA however most of them related to ensuring we had good governance processes in place and managing these on a daily basis… which is what led me into the role that I’m in now!

Since starting at SWGP in November 2022, I like to think I have grown in confidence and knowledge, and I am now going onto undertake an Improvement Specialist Level 5 apprenticeship with the full support of the SWGP Directors”.

What’s a motto you live by, when it comes to your growth/development?

“What have you got to lose?!…

If I hadn’t put myself forward for so many opportunities in the last couple of years, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Some of the roles I have gone into, I’ve known absolutely nothing about, but as long as you’re honest, a quick learner and a hard worker, you’ve got nothing to worry about”.

What would you suggest to anyone else in a similar role, who is looking to progress at SWGP?

“For anybody else looking to progress at SWGP, I would recommend having a discussion with your line manager to identify opportunities available to you. It could be a promotion, a course you’d like to do that would help you in your role and further your career, or a learning opportunity, to get to know what other people do which may be of interest to you later in your career journey. I’m very much of the mindset that if you don’t ask, you don’t get”.
