What is the Primary Care Gynaecology Service (PCGS)?
The Primary Care Gynaecology Service (PCGS) provides specialist advice and treatment for patients with common gynaecological conditions. The doctors (GPs) and nurses working within the service have specialist training in gynaecology.
This service has been set up to treat patients who need specialist gynaecological support that may not be supported by their normal GP practice and may not require a hospital referral. This means you will be treated quicker and more conveniently within your local community.
How quickly will patients be seen?
We are not able to offer guaranteed waiting times, but we are confident you will be seen more quickly than waiting for a hospital appointment due to extended waiting lists.
Typical appointment wait times are between fourteen to eighteen weeks
What services do we provide?
This service covers the gynaecology conditions listed below. You will be referred to the hospital for complex or urgent conditions.
- Complex Menopause
- Irregular Bleeding
- Heavy Bleeding (menorrhagia)
- Pessary Insertion to relieve symptoms of vaginal prolapse (where ring pessary fails)
- Menstrual Disorders
- Cervical Polyp removal
- Vulval disorders including vulval biopsy
- Failed insertion or removal of IUD (coil)
How does it work?
Now that your GP has referred you to the PCGS, the booking team will be in touch to book an initial telephone consultation. Following this consultation, the specialist GP will explain to you whether you need any tests or follow up consultations. They will also update your clinical notes so that your own GP is aware of your treatment plan.
If required, the PCGS GP may refer you on to hospital, although in most cases they should be able to meet your needs within the service.
Who will provide your treatment?
The PCGS is a GP-led NHS service delivered by GPs, nurses and healthcare assistants with training in gynaecology. Most of these clinicians already work at one of the many GP practices in Coventry and Warwickshire.
GPs delivering the PCGS have undergone additional training to take on this extended role and have close links with specialist consultants at our local hospitals.
What support is available during in-person appointments?
A healthcare assistant will be present alongside a GP for any procedures, but you are welcome to bring someone with you should you wish to.
Where are the clinics located?
following your initial telephone consultation, if the doctor feels that an in-person consultation is needed, the service will try to give you a location as near as possible to your home address, but it may well be that an earlier appointment is available at one of our other locations.
