The PCGS provides a single point of access for routine gynaecology conditions and treatments where these cannot be met within individual practices.

These include:

  • Complex Menopause
  • Irregular Bleeding
  • Heavy Bleeding (menorrhagia)
  • Pessary Insertion to relieve symptoms of vaginal prolapse (where ring pessary fails)
  • Menstrual Disorders
  • Cervical Polyp removal
  • Vulval disorders including vulval biopsy

The service is accessed via GP referral only. Patients cannot self-refer into the service. If you are a patient at a Coventry and Warwickshire GP Practice, you can be referred by your GP.

PCGS was commissioned initially for one year by Coventry and Warwickshire ICB, to help tackle the long waits currently facing some patients referred to secondary care.
The service is delivered by SWGP on behalf of the four GP Federations working together as Coventry & Warwickshire Integrated Primary Care.

What does the Primary Care Gynaecology Service cover?

This service provides specialist telephone and face to face consultations for patients with the following common conditions or treatment needs:

How do I access the service?

If you require our gynae service your GP will refer you following an initial consultation. Patients cannot self-refer into the service.

If you are already on a hospital waiting list for one of the conditions above, where necessary our team will be in touch to offer you an appointment with the Primary Care Gynaecology Service.

Where will the clinics take place?

Initial consultations may take place over the telephone to assess your needs and consider any additional tests that may be required. After the initial review of your referral or following the telephone consultation, you may be offered a face-to-face appointment at one of the clinic locations below.

Why can’t I just book a normal GP appointment?

Although the Primary Care Gynaecology Service is GP-led, this is a specialist service provided by GPs with additional gynaecology training and covers needs which can’t always be met during a standard GP consultation.

Will I get the specialist care I need?

Yes. GPs delivering the Primary Care Gynaecology Service have undergone additional training to take on this role, including clinical experience of delivering gynaecology services. We also maintain close links with specialist consultants at our local hospitals.

In most cases, this service will be able to offer the treatment and ongoing support patients need within the community.

How quickly will I be seen?

Although we can’t give an exact timeframe, the waiting times for the primary care service will be much shorter than being referred to hospital due to longer waiting lists following the pandemic.

What if I still need to see a consultant?

Following triage by our GPs, if they feel that you require support from a hospital consultant you will be referred on to the hospital. We will communicate this onward referral to you via letter.

Will I see my normal GP?

This is a GP-led service and most of the GPs involved will be from local practices. However, only those who have undertaken the required additional gynaecology training will be involved, and treatment will be provided in dedicated clinic sessions (even if based at your normal practice).

The outcomes of your visit to our clinic will be included in the clinical notes at your GPs practice, with your consent, so your GP will know what treatment you have received and any ongoing care that may be required once you have been discharged from our service.

Who will be providing the service?

The Primary Care Gynaecology Service is being run by the GP Federations across Coventry and Warwickshire. These federations are made up of local GP practices across the county and provide centralised services and support to help practices deliver the best possible care for our patients.

Will providing this service impact the general availability of GP appointments?

No. Although many of the clinicians running this service will be from local practices, any time dedicated to this service will be outside of their existing GP commitments. Running this service will not lead to a reduction in the amount of GP appointments at your local practice.
