Primary Care Dermatology provides specialist consultant and GP care for patients with a range of dermatological conditions where these cannot be treated at your normal GP practice.

This includes:
  • Mild to moderate forms of common rashes
  • Benign and pre-malignant lesions
  • Acne
  • Minor surgical procedures
  • Conditions of the hair, scalp and nails
  • Genital dermatology (excluding sexual health conditions)

If you are a patient aged 16 years or over and registered at a Coventry and Warwickshire GP Practice, you can be referred by your GP. Patients cannot self-refer into the service.

Primary Care Dermatology is for routine referrals only – any instance where cancer is suspected will follow the normal priority hospital referral pathway.

Will I get the specialist care I need?

Yes. Referrals are initially reviewed by a consultant dermatologist to assess whether they are suitable for our service. If not, the patient will be passed onto secondary care.

GPs delivering Primary Care Dermatology have undergone additional training to take on this role, including clinical experience of delivering dermatology services.

How quickly will I be seen?

Although we can’t give an exact timeframe, we aim to see you within six weeks. The waiting times for the primary care service are likely to be much shorter than being referred to hospital.

Will I see my normal GP?

This is a consultant-led service and initially all referrals will be assessed for suitability by a dermatology consultant. Once accepted into our service, you will be seen by a GP with additional training and expertise in dermatology, and treatment will be provided in dedicated clinic sessions (even if based at your normal practice).

The outcomes of your visit to our clinic will be included in the clinical notes at your GP practice, with your consent, so your GP will know what treatment you have received and any ongoing care that may be required once you have been discharged from our service.

Who will be providing the service?

Primary Care Dermatology is run by Coventry & Warwickshire Integrated Primary Care which is made up of the GP Federations which represent local GP practices across the region. We are also working with Consultant Connect who provide the consultant dermatologists and secondary care oversight.

This means patients are initially assessed by a specialist dermatology consultant and then seen in clinics by specially trained GPs with extra training in dermatology.

By working together in this way, we can provide more services to patients within local communities.

Will providing this service impact the general availability of GP appointments?

No. Although many of the clinicians running this service will be from local practices, any time dedicated to this service will be outside of their existing GP commitments. Running this service will not lead to a reduction in the amount of GP appointments at your local practice.
